Azores Bound (eventually)
There is some news in the wind, it’s both old news and future news:

We (David and Ellen, not Steve) are in the midst of planning a move to the Azores, specifically São Miguel Island!
Why are we doing this? Well that’s not a simple question with a simple answer. Essentially, some of the reasons are as follows:
- We visited in 2017 and it is drop-dead beautiful
- The people are very friendly and welcoming
- It is affordable
- While not tropical, there is no winter there
- It is an island (we like islands)
- It is a 4-5 hour direct flight from Boston
- It is not MAGA land and we can ignore politics there
Where are we now with this process?
Planning, but we’re quite a way along with it. We’ve been working with a realtor since before COVID, working with a relocation specialist to set up everything from bank accounts to temporary residency visas (still truding through that process), and keeping an eye on available homes there.
So, I am hoping to keep a long-term journal here, punctuated by photography work (once we get there). In the meantime, this will be an intermittent series updating our progress. Hopefully, once COVID is more under control, things will move more quickly.
If you have any questions I can answer, feel free to ask in the comments section below. For now, here are some links with more information, including a newly published guest portfolio from Paulo Monteiro, a photographer from São Miguel. According to Paulo, he is one of only a few (if not the only) photographer on the island using film. Well, that may be about to change!
