Explorations Chapter III is composed of images taken with various photographic tools over the past three years. The project uses these tools, as well as light and form, to find the connections in our world between places, objects and humanity.

This project is about connecting the landscape, object and humanity, in both visual and spiritual forms. While most photographers keep these subjects separate, David is fascinated by connecting them through various techniques. It is important to the photographer in that he approaches each/all of these subject from a similar place artistically. Subject itself is less important than form and feeling, and the fact that beauty and interest can be found in almost any subject, especially if shaped with a creative photographic brush.
As far as beauty is concerned, it can be found in the subject itself, the lighting which renders the subject, the textures in the images, or the patterns that make up the image. One of the main goals of this photographer is to portray a subject or a theme in a way that is not common or expected, through those aspects of beauty listed above. When working with people, he draws upon their individuality and their inner essence and establish a deeper working relationship. Here his goal is to photograph the subject for it’s inherent traits or beauty, as opposed to layering what society expects to see in the individual though advertising, selling, stereotypes, etc.
These works combine and synthesize modern photographic technology with very traditional tools and techniques to achieve a very personal and contemporary synthesis. David is intrigued with the expressive potential of this merger, which offers a broad range of avenues to “re-present” (rather than document) forms in the visible world.
The blending of old and new, as well as traditional photography and other art forms, is something the photographer is also very interested in. This began with shooting and developing film, continued with large format and the use of old, sometimes “imperfect” lenses (by modern standards). He is attracted to soft focus images and pictorialism. Pinhole and zoneplate cameras continued taking him in this direction, and now also using alternative methods of printing on handcoated paper is another recent way he creates images that are handmade, unique and expressive. He also combines these traditional and modern techniques with other visual arts, such as coloring, toning, painting and collage.
The long term goal of this project is to continue to find the connections in our world between these different forms and entities, and to invoke the acknowledgement of those connections from the viewers of these images.
